Minister
Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure, Malta
Joe Mizzi (born on 7th of March 1952) is a Maltese politician who has been a Member of Parliament since 1987. He became Malta’s Minister for Transport and Infrastructure on March 2013. Joe served as Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister from October 1996 to September 1998. He was first elected a member of the Maltese Parliament representing the Malta Labour Party for the second electoral district in May 1987 General Elections.
Education
Joe Mizzi received his post-secondary education at the Malta Technical Institute; subsequently he followed a course in Advanced Electronics and Telecommunications.
Political career
Joe has been actively involved in the Malta Labour Party since 1975 when he joined as a member of the Kalkara Youth committee of the Malta Labour Party and was appointed Propaganda Secretary.
Joe was first elected to the Maltese Parliament in May 1987 when he contested Malta’s general elections for the first time and was elected a Labour Party MP.
He was re-elected a Member of Parliament in 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 General Elections, representing the Second Electoral District.
Joe held several positions, including:
• Secretary of the Labour Parliamentary Group and a Member of the Administration of the Malta Labour Party, and Opposition Party Whip, 1989 to 2013,
• Malta Labour Party Representative in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA),
• Member of the House Business Committee, 1989 to 2013,
• Shadow Minister for Environmental Planning and Oil Exploration 1998 to 2003,
• Shadow Minister for Infrastructural Services and Oil Exploration, which responsibilities also included Enemalta, Water Services Corporation, Telecommunications, the Malta Maritime Authority and MaltaPost, 2003 to 2008,
• Main spokesman for Transport, Resources and Oil Exploration, including the Malta Maritime Authority and Malta International Airport 2009 to 2013.
Joe Mizzi served as Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister, with responsibilities for Police, Home Affairs, Telecommunications and Oil Exploration, from October 1996 until the 1998 General Elections.
Joe became Minister for Transport and Infrastructure in March 2013, responsible for the portfolio of:

Coordination of Road Building, Maintenance and Landscaping

Career outside politics
Mizzi started his career working as a Technician/Operator in the Computer Room based on a ship dedicated to Seismic Surveys (Oil Exploration) in the Maltese territory between 1971 and 1972.
Later, he was engaged as a Radio Officer on merchant ships where he continued until 1975 when pursued his techniques in the sector of Telecommunications up to 1992, holding the post of Senior Technician with Deutsche Welle Radio.
In 1983 he was entrusted by the Labour Government in assisting the setting up and formation of RTV Ltd, where he later served for a number of years as the Technical Director, representing the government side.
Family
Mr Mizzi is married to Joyce nee Vassallo, and they have two children, Matthew and Charmaine.
